Sulu is a born and bred Wellingtonian, and grew up in Island Bay. His parents immigrated to New Zealand from Samoa in the early 1960s. His father is from the village of Satalo, and his mother is from Apia. He has been the founder of two startups, most recently as part of the inaugural Kiwibank Fintech Accelerator, where his company endeavoured to make the process of sending money back to the Pacific Islands easier and more affordable. Sulu has a keen interest in the blockchain and cryptocurrency space, and studied software development at Enspiral Dev Academy in Wellington. He has also studied journalism at Wellington Polytechnic, and attended Wellington College.
